Volunteer

Sign up for a day full of books, authors, and fun!

The Gaithersburg Book Festival is an enormous undertaking that would not be possible without the generous assistance of numerous volunteers.

We are now accepting volunteers for the 2017 Festival. We have numerous volunteer opportunities associated with putting on this world-class event. Please see the job descriptions below, then take a moment to let us know that you’re interested in helping.

Fill out the Volunteer Sign-up Form and we’ll be in touch to find out more about your interests and availability and to provide training.

Note: You must be at least 16 years old to apply. SSL hours are available.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Author Pavilion Manager

  •  Must be 21+
  •  Position is from 9:00am to 5:15pm
  •  Prepare stage/tent for each presentation
  •  Welcome authors and VIPs
  • Ensure all of the authors’ needs are met during the presentation
  • Work with the Author Pavilion Assistant and Signing Line Escort

Author Pavilion Assistant

  •  Help set up, maintain and clean up site
  •  Assist manager with preparing stage/tent for each presentation
  •  Manage seating/Q&A lines
  •  Other jobs as needed

Check-In Assistant (VIPs, Introducers, and Volunteers)

  •  Help set up, maintain and clean up site
  •  Assist manager with check-in of individuals
  •  Distribute items to tents and other areas as needed
  •  Other jobs as needed

Information Booth/Greeter

  • Answer questions about festival activities and locations
  • Help with any problems brought to your attention
  • Retain lost and found items
  • Pass out festival programs

Writing Workshops Assistant

  • Help set up, maintain and clean up site
  • Assist with sign-up
  • Assist instructors and attendees as needed

Children’s Performance Stage Manager

  • Prepare stage/tent for each presentation
  • Welcome and introduce entertainers
  • Coordinate and assist with stage performances as needed
  • Welcome and assist children and families

Children’s Activities Assistant

  • Help set up, maintain and cleanup site
  • Assist with activities, as needed
  • Welcome and assist children and families

Parking Lot and Shuttle Stop Monitor

  • Assist with VIP and Handicapped parking (help to find spots)
  • Direct traffic in and out of lot, check for passes
  • Monitor lines at shuttle stop

Floater

  •  Relieve volunteers as needed
  •  Must be knowledgeable and flexible to work in any job area

Set-up

  • Must be 18+
  • Shift from 7:00am – 11:00 am
  • Verify festival materials are set up correctly, tables, chairs, podiums, white boards, etc.
  • Distribute materials to tents
  • Set up all speaker tents (programs, general materials)
  • Set up Information Booths

Tear Down

  • Shift 5:00-8:00pm
  • Take down signage
  • Collect materials from tents
  • Pack up Information Booth materials
  • Assist with loading the van
  • Other jobs as needed
